An Air Conditioner (often referred to as AC) is a home appliance, system, or mechanism designed to dehumidify and extract heat from an area. The cooling is done using a simplerefrigeration cycle. In construction, a complete system of heating, ventilation and air conditioning is referred to as "HVAC". Its purpose, in a building or an automobile, is to provide comfort during either hot or cold weather.
Room air conditioners come in two forms: unitary and packaged terminal PTAC systems. Unitary systems, the common one room air conditioners, sit in a window or wall opening, with interior controls. Interior air is cooled as a fan blows it over the evaporator. On the exterior the air is heated as a second fan blows it over the condenser. In this process, heat is drawn from the room and discharged to the environment. A large house or building may have several such units, permitting each room be cooled separately. PTAC systems are also known as wall split air conditioning systems or ductless systems. These PTAC systems which are frequently used in hotels have two separate units (terminal packages), the evaporative unit on the interior and the condensing unit on the exterior, with tubing passing through the wall and connecting them.
Inverter Series
Inverter series Air conditioners have an advantage over the conventional Air conditioners. They have specially designed Compressors operating on DC voltage. The compressor does not trip but its revolutions are reduced from 6000 rpm thereby consuming less of electricity. It maintains the room temperature at the temperature set by the individual. The thermostat does not trip but maintains the temperature by reducing its R.P.M. Hence it is more advantageous in Power consumption and refrains from the repeated start of the compressor. A comparison of the same with the constant speed Air Conditioners is given below:-
Inverter A/C Vs Constant speed A/C
Inverter compressor and constant speed compressor power consumption comparison.
In order we can begin the comparison between them.
The following clarification need to make.
1) Both are single split type for easy of calculation. In this case we choose both are 18,000BTU.
2) The constant speed model=ABC and Inverter model=XYZ
3) The outdoor temperature=35C
4) The indoor temperature before cool down=27C.
5) The Indoor temp to be achieved( Set temperature)=23C
6) The heat load in the room is stable and not much variation.
7) The room chosen was Master bedroom and for resting and sleeping only.
8) Since inverter compressor changing speed vary to the condition change. For easy of calculation we assume the following
a. We assume that the compressor never switch off even the temperature 2C below the set point temperature. (In actual case, the compressor OFF. Saving should be more)
b. We also assume that at low speed the power consumption chosen was part load condition of 50% of full load. ( In actual case the speed is lower than 50%, saving should be more)
9) We start the both unit from 9pm to 7am daily.
10) Daily operation=10hours, total of 600mins.
11) One year=365 days.
12) Constant speed systems pull down load need 40mins to bring 27C to 23C. (SET TEMP.)
13) In constant speed system, to maintain the temperature to the Set temperature of 23C. There are 15min X 15 times, the compressor OFF and 20min X16 times, the compressor ON for the total of 10 hours.
14) We consider the total ON time=40min+16X20min=360min.
15) ABC power consumption=1.865KW/230V
16) 360min/60min=6hour
17) The inverter system pull down to Set temperature of 23C, 2/3 faster than constant system=26min at full speed.
18) The less of time at 50% load speed=574min.
19) XYZ at full speed load power consumption=1.480KW/230V
20) XYZ at 50% speed load power consumption=0.51KW/230V
21) All voltage maintain at 230Volt AC.
The calculations show that power consumption for both types of Air Conditioners (1. 5TR) on yearly basis are as follows:-
1) Constant Speed Air Conditioners (1.5 TR)= 4084.35 KWH
2) Inverter series Air Conditioners (1.5 TR)= 2014.44 KWH It is observed that Inverter series consume half of the power as compared to Constant Speed ones.
